CPS Energy to Conduct Semi-Annual Test of Emergency Alert System

12/04/2012

CPS Energy will issue a semi-annual test for its emergency alert system that notifies customers of major or system-wide outages, or energy emergencies. The notification will be sent on the afternoon of Thursday, December 6 to the vast majority of the utility’s residential and commercial electric customers, including Spanish-speaking customers.

Current phone numbers and/or e-mail addresses on file with accounts will be used for the CPS Energy Alert. Customers can choose to receive outage notifications via e-mail, phone and/or text (provider charges may apply per the customer’s plan). They also may elect to opt out of the system. However, they will not receive direct and timely notifications should an emergency occur. Customers who have previously opted not to receive the alerts will not be included in the test.

Customers who currently pay their bills online through CPS Energy’s Manage My Account may change their alert preferences online. All other customers should call (210) 353-2255 to make any changes.

CPS Energy Alert will be activated only in emergency situations or in the case of system-wide outages possibly caused by major storms or extreme temperatures. The system will not be used for non-emergency communications such as marketing or billing. Alerts for localized outages are not provided at this time but CPS Energy plans to include them in the near future. Periodic tests of the system help evaluate the notification procedure and provide customers assurance they are receiving alerts at their preferred contact option.
