CPS Energy Tops in South in J.D. Power and Associates Study

07/30/2009

CPS Energy finished as the top-ranked company in the South Region and third-highest nationally among 59 large utilities, according to the recently released J. D. Power and Associates 2009 Electric Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study™.

CPS Energy’s overall score of 665 not only was highest in the South Region among large utilities but also was far ahead of the U. S. average of 618.  The J. D. Power and Associates study is based on responses from more than 79,500 online interviews conducted from July 2008 through May 2009.  Overall customer satisfaction is measured through six factors: power quality and reliability; price; billing and payment; corporate citizenship; communications; and customer service.

“This nationally significant level of customer satisfaction comes on the heels of other high J. D. Power and Associates rankings for CPS Energy over the past several years,” said Milton B. Lee, CPS Energy CEO.  “This consistently high performance is a tribute to our conscientious, hard-working employees and to cooperation and positive feedback from our customers.”

Lee attributed the high regional and national rankings to CPS Energy’s ongoing pursuit of its Core Purpose – “Benefitting our community by improving the quality of life of the people we serve.”
“We exist solely to serve the energy needs of Greater San Antonio,” Lee said, “and our dedicated employees are focused on providing reliable, cost-competitive service to our customers.  We are very proud of the fact that CPS Energy bills are the lowest among the nation’s 20 largest cities.”

Lee said CPS Energy’s fuels diversification program has produced big benefits for customers.

“Fuels diversification means we can generate electricity with a variety of energy sources – nuclear, coal, natural gas, renewables – and help keep production costs as low as possible,” he explained.  “We’re also striving to help our customers save energy and money through STEP – Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan – that offers rebates for home and business energy-efficiency improvements.”

Noting that CPS Energy continues to add several hundred customers each month, Lee pointed to ongoing infrastructure improvements such as substations and power lines to serve both existing and new customers.  The company also has expanded its bill-payment options including online payment, a convenience now used by almost 200,000 CPS Energy customers.  He pledged to continue the company’s efforts to look for even more customer service improvements.

CPS Energy is the nation's largest municipally owned energy company providing both natural gas and electric service. Acquired by the City of San Antonio in 1942, the company serves 707,000 electric customers and 322,000 natural gas customers in and around America's seventh-largest city. CPS Energy owns the highest financial ratings of any electric system in the U. S., stands number 1 in wind-energy capacity among municipally owned utilities across the country and ranks number 1 in Texas in solar-generated electricity under contract.
