Customer Engineering


CPS Energy provides electric and natural gas services for all residential and commercial customers and developments in our service territory. All service requests, whether new service installation requests, service remodel requests, All-Night Security Lighting (ANSL) requests or street lighting requests (associated with new residential developments), are handled by CPS Energy’s Customer Engineering Department.

If a commercial service request meets the criteria for a padmount transformer service installation, it will be assigned to a Large Commercial Services & Developments Engineer or Designer, who will coordinate all of your service requirements.  Unlike the Commercial Services Section, service requests are not assigned by geographical area in the Large Commercial Services & Developments Section, but rather are assigned based on a combination of factors including customer type, electric system that customer will be served from (Downtown Network System, South Texas Medical Center Underground System, Airport Underground System, etc.) and work load.

Normally, CPS Energy will perform the trenching and infrastructure installation for the electric and gas facilities required for residential developments. However, developers have the option of hiring their own contractor to perform this work, as opposed to having CPS Energy perform the full installation.  In these cases, the developer’s contractor must meet the Contractor Qualifications in order to be approved by CPS Energy to perform this work and the contractor must install all facilities in accordance with CPS Energy’s Construction Standards.

In performing its construction activities to provide electric and natural gas services to its customers, CPS Energy must comply with all applicable environmental and regulatory requirements. In order to ensure CPS Energy’s compliance with these requirements, new Environmental Compliance Review Requirements have been developed and were implemented in January 2014. Customers should review these procedures and familiarize themselves with the new requirements to avoid any unnecessary costs and delays to their projects.
