Is Your Refrigerator Running Up Your Bill?

Perform an Energy Audit to Catch Costly Problems
refrigerator

Nearly every day you cook meals, run the dishwasher, and wash and dry clothes. Your refrigerator and freezer are operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make sure your food is stored safely and conveniently. Refrigerators use a lot of energy, especially if they’re not an energy-efficient model.

How energy-efficient are your appliances? Do you have to defrost the fridge frequently? What about your clothes dryer? Does your dryer take several cycles to dry clothes? These problems could be raising your energy costs.

If you think you don’t have energy-efficient appliances in your home, review the appliances section of the energy audit and check out energy saving tips for appliances. Watch the video for additional help on conducting your own energy audit.

Energy Audit Checklist - Refrigerators

  Check for temperature in refrigerator by placing thermometer in refrigerator/freezer.
  Maintain a temperature of 37-40 degrees in refrigerator.
  Maintain a temperature of 0-5 degrees in freezer.
  Clean condenser coils once per year (located under or behind refrigerator).
  Clean magnetic seal with warm soapy water.
  Check magnetic seal for cracks, mold, and condensation (these may indicate leaks).
  Test magnetic seal, using a piece of paper. Close the door on the paper and pull. There should be some resistance.
  If refrigerator door seal is worn, replace with a new seal.
Note: Keep freezers as full as possible. This prevents the refrigerators from using extra energy to keep the inside cool.
