Help Your Air Conditioner Do Its Job, Without Running Up The Bill
Your air conditioning system uses more energy than anything else in your home. Here are ways to save energy and make sure you’re getting the most out of your cooling dollars:
Keep a 2- to 3-foot clearance around the outside air conditioning units to ensure proper air circulation.
Clean and replace air conditioner filters every two weeks during the summer.
Use window units for single-room cooling rather than central units.
For added comfort in occupied rooms, use fans to help circulate air. You’ll feel about 4 degrees cooler than the actual room temperature.
For every degree you raise your thermostat, you can save up to 4 percent on your monthly electric bill.
Keep your thermostat set at 78 degrees or higher when you’re at home. When you’re away from home, set your thermostat at 85 degrees or higher.
Consider installing a programmable thermostat. Set the thermostat so it will automatically adjust the temperature when you’re home or away at work or school.
