Programmable Thermostats Control Your AC, So You Don't Have To

Whose job is it to turn up the air conditioner? Last one out of the house in the morning?  To keep costs down, and to keep from forgetting to raise the thermostat, put it on autopilot with a programmable thermostat.

Peak Saver
  • Most programmable thermostats come with four daily settings to cool the house when family members are home and raise the temperature when everyone is out.
  • You can save 10 percent or more on your heating and cooling costs by program- ming the thermostat to adjust the temperature at night or when you're away.
  • Want a free programmable thermostat?  CPS Energy offers a free Honeywell unit complete with free installation if you sign up to be a Peak Saver customer.
  • Peak Saver thermostats have a radio receiver inside allowing CPS Energy to remotely cycle off your compressor for short periods (approximately 10 minutes each half-hour) between 3 and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, from May through September.
  • CPS Energy only uses the Peak Savers when there’s a high demand for electricity, and most homeowners don’t even notice the short cycling period.
  • You can make the most out of your conventional thermostat by following the same timing guidelines as a programmable:
o Adjust the temperature 7 degrees higher when you plan to leave the house for several hours.
o Adjust the temperature 4 degrees higher when you head to bed.  Use ceiling fans or portable fans to help circulate air and keep you comfortable.
