Plant a Tree to Save Energy

Trees can be valuable assets for homeowners because they create curb appeal, improve air quality, and provide energy savings. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, carefully positioned trees can save up to 25 percent of a household’s energy consumption for heating and cooling. CPS ENERGY VIDEO TIP: Properly Placed Trees Can Reduce Home Energy Costs

Keep the following tips in mind to realize the energy-saving benefits of trees for your home:

evergreen

Evergreen Trees

Evergreen trees create wind breaks, which block cold winter winds. They ease the load on your home heating system, which saves you energy and money on your heating bill! We recommend evergreen trees such as Live Oaks, Mountain Laurels and Yaupon Holly.

Plant evergreen trees on the north and west sides of your home.

Deciduous Trees

Deciduous trees provide energy-saving shade during the summer by reducing the workload on your air conditioning system. Additionally, they allow sunshine to warm your home during the winter months – saving you money year round!  We suggest deciduous trees such as Red Oaks, Sycamores and Redbuds.

Plant deciduous trees on the south and west sides of your home.
