CPS Energy is proud of the fact that its customers pay the lowest energy bills in the country. Thanks to a flexible mix of low-sulfur coal, natural gas, nuclear and renewable energy sources, electricity is not only affordable, it's reliable.
Today, coal satisfies more than 41 percent of Greater San Antonio's electrical demand. It is one of the most abundant fuel sources and is available at a comparatively low price. As part of an effort to meet future demands, CPS Energy is constructing a new coal-fired plant at Calaveras Lake adjacent to three existing units.
Nuclear energy provides more than one-third (36 percent) of the area's electrical requirements. Nuclear energy is provided to local customers via the South Texas Project (STP) in Bay City on the Texas coast. CPS Energy owns a 40 percent share of STP. Nuclear energy is safe, cost-effective and one of the most environmentally friendly energies available capable of meeting the electrical demands of a growing population.
Natural gas, which comprises 17 percent of CPS Energy's fuel generation mix, is highly efficient for heating your home, water heating, cooking, clothes drying and other heat-generating purposes. However, the market price and supply of natural gas is more volatile. Despite this market volatility, CPS Energy will continue to rely on natural gas as an economical option for home use and to meet short-duration, peak electric-load requirements.
In addition to coal, natural gas and nuclear, CPS Energy also utilizes renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and methane gas to provide low-cost power to our customers.
