Increase Renewable Energy Resources

CPS Energy's commitment to renewable energy is second to none. As part of a diversified fuels mix for electrical production, renewable energy -- including wind, solar and landfill gas -- is an important part of our Strategic Energy Plan.

Currently, our renewable energy capacity is equal to 11 percent of local peak demand for electrical power. In fact, CPS Energy is one of only a few utility systems nationwide that has surpassed the double-digit percentage mark for renewable energy. However, we are focused on expanding this commitment, achieving renewable-energy capacity equal to 20 percent of peak demand by 2020.

Electricity generated from wind farms in West Texas makes CPS Energy the largest publicly owned purchaser of wind power in the state. We currently obtain up to 500 MW of wind-generated electricity from the Desert Sky and Cottonwood Creek wind farms near Iraan and Sweetwater, respectively. That's enough to power 115,000 homes. Wind energy is made available to CPS Energy customers through Windtricity®, a voluntary renewable-energy purchase option.

In addition to wind power, CPS Energy has several solar demonstration projects in operation, and the company is partnering with Silver Ventures, the company renovating historic Pearl Brewery, on the installation of a 200-kilowatt solar array, the largest project of its kind in Texas. CPS Energy also offers valuable rebates to both residential and commercial customers for solar installations. Furthermore, we have entered into a 15-year agreement to purchase all of the power generated from landfill gas collected at the Covel Gardens Landfill. The annual output from this landfill gas should generate enough electricity to power more than 7,000 homes.
