Simply stand outside when the sun is rising or setting. The sun always rises in the east and sets to the west. Once you determine east and west, face your body with your right side to the east. This will place you facing north, you can stretch out your arms out in a 90-degree angle in front of you, and that will show you where you can not plant your trees.
Trees planted on the west, south and east sides of your house/building provide shade from the sun during the hottest times of the day. This helps reduce the load on your air-conditioning system. Shading and evapotranspiration (the process by which a plant actively moves and releases water vapor) from trees can reduce surrounding air temperatures as much as 9° F (5°C).
