The following guidelines apply to the installation of solar water heater systems eligible for 2009 CPS Energy rebates:

  • The current installed hot water heater must be electric. Removal or replacement of current natural gas water heaters will deem system ineligible for program participation.
  • Solar water heaters systems must be OG-300 certified the SRCC (Solar Rating Certification Corporation).
  • The one-time rebate will be based on $0.60 per kWh per year at SRCC rated “Annual Savings” output for electric backup. The maximum rebate is $2,000 per account.
  • All installations must adhere to the City of San Antonio building permit process and new equipment must be installed by licensed contractors.
  • All installations must meet all applicable City of San Antonio codes.
  • Customer will have 90 days (from receipt date of application) to install equipment.
  • The solar water heater must preheat water for an electric water heater that is permanently installed at the structure. Alternately, an auxiliary natural gas water heater may be used if it replaces the current installed electric water (if available).
  • The solar water heater installer is responsible for determining the optimal location of the solar collectors. The proposed location must provide maximum benefits.
  • Manufacturer must provide a minimum five (5) year warranty on major components.
  • Additionally, the system shall be designed for frost protection and scale elimination or remediation.
  • Installed solar water heater equipment must be new. Rebates will not be offered retroactively (on equipment already installed). Use of existing water storage tanks will be allowed on a case by case basis.
  • The rebate application must be submitted before equipment is installed. The application must be accompanied by SRCC rating data, warranty information and a site sketch showing solar collector location(s).
  • If re-roofing is required, solar water heating system removal and reinstallation is at customer expense. Motors, Pumps, Batteries or any other such device associated with the solar water heating system will not be covered under the rebate.
