Cooking Safely in Your Kitchen

Kitchen safety

Keeping your kitchen accident free is your best recipe. Remember these safety tips as you use or cook near electrical or gas devices:

  • Always turn pot handles toward the back of the range to prevent small children from reaching and pulling down a hot pan.
  • Don't overload circuits by inserting too many plugs into a single outlet. Overloading a circuit could cause an electrical fire.
  • Clean equipment only after you have turned off the switch and pulled the plug.
  • Electrical outlets in the kitchen should be protected by Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs). If you don't have them, hire an electrician to install these devices to protect electrical receptacles near water.
  • Be sure your hands are dry and your feet are not in contact with water whenever you operate electrical appliances.
  • Keep the natural gas kitchen range clean. Rinse and dry burners before reinstalling. Be careful not to damage or change settings on air shutters or sleeves.
  • Never use the kitchen range as a space heater. This can damage the range and produce dangerous carbon monoxide gas.  CPS ENERGY VIDEO TIP
  • If the pilot light won't light or if you smell gas, call CPS Energy at (210) 353-HELP (4357) from a neighbor's house or a public phone. Never try to locate a gas leak yourself. Using any open flame or even a flashlight to find a leak, it could be fatal.
