Extreme winter weather events may disrupt local power plants as well as the statewide electrical grid. These events may result in rolling power outages throughout the community. As you wait for electricity to be restored, CPS Energy recommends the following tips:
Set your thermostat between 65 to 68 degrees. Use ceiling fans at lowest setting in reverse mode to circulate warm air.
Turn off breakers to high energy-use equipment such as air conditioners/electric furnaces, washers and refrigerators. Power restoration may be delayed if large appliances are left on.
Conserve power. Turn lights and portable electrical heaters off when they are not being used.
Layer clothing to keep warm at home.
Keep refrigerator or freezer doors closed to maintain the unit’s temperature. See USDA website
Use caution when driving, as traffic signals may be disrupted. Local highways and roads may be affected by snow or ice.
Have a flashlight and emergency kit ready. Use a battery-powered radio or an Internet-connected device (laptop or smartphone) for outage updates. Find outage information at www.cpsenergy.com or see our Facebook and Twitter sites.
