Through this method, you can choose to participate at any level, from 10 to 100 percent of your monthly bill. For example, let’s say your neighbors, the Brees family, are interested in a 25 percent enrollment level for Windtricity. For example, in May they used 1,200 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity each month (see the Account Comparison Summary on your bill to find your average).

The Brees’ can calculate May’s monthly charge for Windtricity in two steps:

• First, they multiply May’s kilowatt hours (1,200) by their Windtricity participation percentage of 25 percent (0.025) to find that 300 of May’s kilowatt hours are Windtricity hours: (1,200 X .025 = 300 kWh)
• Second, they multiply 300 kWh by the Windtricity rate of 3.65 cents (0.0365): (300 X $.0365 = $10.95)

The Brees family paid $10.95 in May for Windtricity by choosing a 25 percent participation level.

While $10.95 will be added to the Brees’ May bill, they avoid paying 25 percent (their Windtricity participation level) of May’s fuel and regulatory adjustment charges (the part of every monthly bill that varies with fuel and regulatory prices). The May fuel and regulatory adjustment charge for the Brees’ 1,200 kWh home was $16.92 (or $0.0141 per kWh). Therefore, their fuel adjustment charge is reduced by $4.23: ($16.92 X .25 = $4.23)                                         

The Brees family can subtract $4.23 from their Windtricity charge of $10.95, making May’s real or actual cost for Windtricity just $6.72!: ($10.95 - $4.23 = $6.72)

Each month, the amount the Brees family invests in Windtricity will vary depending on the amount of energy they use and that month’s fuel and regulatory factor.
