Let's use the Brees family again as an example to calculate the cost of Windtricity at a set rate:
The Brees family chooses a set rate of $10 per month for Windtricity. If they divide their set rate of $10.00 by the Windtricity rate of 3.65 cents ($0.0365), the Brees can claim that $10 buys 274 kWh of clean and green, renewable wind energy, a portion of their monthly consumption: ($10.00 / $0.0365 = 274 kWh)
While the Brees family is paying $10 per month for 274 kWh of Windtricity, they avoid paying $3.86 of that month’s fuel and regulatory charges. (274 X 0.0141 = $3.86)
If the Brees family participated in Windtricity last May using the set formula, their actual orreal cost would have been $6.14. ($10.00 – 3.86 = $6.14)
Which One -- Percentage or Set Rate?
By comparison, the Brees’ are still paying the same unit price for Windtricity whether they choose to participate at a percentage or a set rate:
The difference is the amount the Brees family pays each month for Windtricity (before fuel adjustment charges are factored in) will not vary on their monthly bill (each month, they will purchase 274 kWh of Windtricity for $10).
