CPS Energy’s Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP) aims at reducing the growth in our community’s demand for electricity by 771 megawatts (MW) by 2020 -- that’s the output of a large power plant.

We’re investing to meet this goal, focusing on these key objectives:

  • Encourage residents to purchase energy-efficient appliances
  • Increase the use of energy efficient lighting and programmable thermostats
  • Improve residential insulation use, as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • Increase commercial lighting retrofits, encourage use of energy-efficient, commercial HVAC systems and offer other energy-saving commercial programs


Our Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP) is an innovative energy conservation program with the goal to save 771 Megawatts (MW) between 2009 and 2020.  The cost of the program was initially estimated at $849 million, with annual costs ranging from $12 million to over $77 million.  Through STEP, we provide financial incentives to our residential and commercial customers to participate in energy saving practices and install energy efficient fixtures to reduce customers’ use of electricity on a permanent basis.

We achieved the community’s goal of reducing energy demand by 771 MW!  In fact, the goal was achieved a year ahead of schedule and 15% under budget.
