The right tree location can help you save energy
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, carefully positioned trees can save up to 25 percent of a home’s energy consumption for heating and cooling.
Here are some things to keep in mind when planting trees to cut energy costs.
Evergreen trees:
- Create wind breaks, which block cold winter winds, easing the load on your home heating system
- Varieties such as live oaks, mountain laurels and Yaupon Holly are highly recommended
- Should be planted on the north and west sides of your home
Deciduous trees:
- Provide energy-saving shade during the summer by reducing the workload on your air conditioning system
- Allow sunshine to warm your home during the winter months
- We recommend red oaks, sycamores and redbuds
- Plant them on the south and west sides of your home
Planting tips:
- Always call 8-1-1 before you dig; it’s the law
- Locate trees a proper distance from your home
- Plant large species at least 20 feet away from power lines
