Roofless Solar
In 2016, CPS Energy selected Clean Energy Collective (CEC) to construct a 1.2-megawatt (MW) Roofless Solar Array called “Community Solar”. This centrally located solar facility is built within the community just east of Adkins, TX, which allowed multiple residents and business owners to buy panels in the same array. The solar power produced is fed back to CPS Energy’s grid, and CPS Energy applies credits on customers’ electric bills for their renewable generation.
Big Sun Community Solar
In 2019, CPS Energy selected Go Smart Solar, a local San Antonio firm, to operate and maintain 5 megawatts (MW) of community-owned solar power. Through this partnership, solar-panel covered parking spaces were constructed throughout the city in a project known as Big Sun Community Solar. This program allowed customers to purchase panels at off-site locations and receive credits on their electric bills for the energy produced.
In 2026, CPS Energy is expanding access to solar energy for thousands more. Big Sun Solar will build and operate up to 50 megawatts of new solar generation. The new program will generate enough electricity to power approximately 10,000 homes during peak demand, while allowing customers to benefit from the production of solar energy without the need to install or maintain panels on their own property.
Customers can purchase as little as one solar panel in a shared solar facility or purchase enough panels to offset up to 100% of their average annual electric consumption.
The program is open to all CPS Energy customers, including renters and businesses, with bill credits that follow customers if they move within the CPS Energy service area.
