CPS Energy’s offices and customer service centers will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2025, in observance of Independence Day. We will reopen on Monday, July 7, at 7:45 AM. Although our call center will be closed for regular business, we are still open for customers to report natural gas or electric emergencies anytime by calling 210-353-HELP (4357) or 1-800-870-1006. Online services may be conveniently accessed through Manage My Account (MMA).
A portable generator can be an ideal secondary source of power––especially during power failures. But it can be dangerous if it’s not used appropriately. Before operating a generator, read the manual, make sure you understand it, and call a professional if you have any doubts.
Here are some safety tips:
- Generators should be placed at least 25 feet from a home or building
- Never use a generator in an enclosed space
- Make sure your generator is properly grounded
- Generators should not be connected directly to household wiring except by a qualified electrician.
- Use only 3-prong extension cords with appropriate watts or amps ratings
- Never overload your generator
- Connect using a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), and
- Turn off all appliances powered by the generator before shutting it down
Some dangers associated with generators include:
- Shocks and electrocution
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Fires caused by unsafe fuel handling, and
- Noise and vibration hazards
